ACRYLIC PAINTING
What you'll do: Paint with acrylics at Story Parlor, with materials set out and ready when you arrive.
What you'll leave with: The experience of starting something without a plan, with no one grading the result.
Why it matters: At home, nothing begins until you've thought it through for everyone. Here, nothing needs to be figured out first. You pick up the brush and begin.
Special Experiences
- Guided art walk in Asheville
- Time to explore materials and develop your own creative approach
- An evening to yourself to dine and explore the city
What You’ll Leave With
The experience of starting something without a plan, with no one grading the result.
Why it Matters
At home, nothing begins until you've thought it through for everyone. Here, nothing needs to be figured out first. You pick up the brush and begin.
SATURDAY
GUIDED PAINTING & COMPOSITION
What you'll do: Follow along step by step as you build a painting, with the structure held for you.
What you'll leave with: A finished piece, and the feeling of being led instead of leading.
Why it matters: At home, you're the one who decides, plans, and guides everyone else. Here, someone else holds the plan. You just follow the brush.
WATERCOLOR EXPRESSION
What you'll do: Play with watercolor and let the color move, bleed, and surprise you.
What you'll leave with: Practice at loosening your grip and letting things unfold imperfectly.
Why it matters: Real life rewards control and precision. Watercolor doesn't cooperate with either, and that's the lesson. You practice being okay when it doesn't go as planned.
Special Experiences
- Individual chair massages
- Onsite portrait artist creating guest portraits
- Opportunities to pause, recharge, and enjoy the retreat experience
- Onsite dinner featuring a special chef experience
What You’ll Leave With
A stronger sense of your creative voice, a few new techniques to carry with you, and the confidence to begin even when you don’t have the whole picture figured out.
Why it Matters
Sometimes, all you need is a foundation. You don’t have to know exactly where you’re going to take the first step.
SUNDAY
OPEN STUDIO (Acrylic, Watercolor Inks, Mixed-Media Free Play)
What you'll do: Return to any material you want, with no prompt and no schedule.
What you'll leave with: A clearer sense of what you're drawn to when no one's directing you.
Why it matters: Daily life is mostly responding to what's asked of you. Here, you follow your own instincts and learn what they sound like.
Special Experiences
- Farewell brunch
- Closing reflection and intention setting
- keepsakes and departure gifts
What You’ll Leave With
Finished and unfinished pieces of art, new connections, and a little more room to hear yourself think. You’ll leave refreshed, creatively energized, and with something you can carry into your everyday life.
Why it Matters
The more you trust your creative instincts, the more comfortable you become trusting yourself. You learn to make choices without needing someone else to tell you they’re right, to let curiosity lead instead of overthinking, and to create without worrying about getting it wrong. That kind of freedom doesn’t have to stay on the page. You can carry it into the rest of your life.
